Why learn math?

Math is required in so many career fields of today. From medical to technology, business to fashion. You will be hard pressed to find any career that does not use some form of math. However, math is so much more than the concepts presented in the classroom.

  1. Math teaches you to think. You go beyond basic math facts and have to analyze story problems and equations.
  2. Math teaches you about problem solving. Sometimes there are multiple ways to reach a solution. You have to determine which method is the easiest and most efficient.
  3. Math teaches you about the big picture. While math is very procedural and step-by-step, you have to have a goal in mind when solving a problem. You also have to be able to interpret your results.

Kathryn West

My name is Kathryn West. This is my 8th year teaching at Hilltop, and my 11th year teaching altogether.

I have been married to my husband, Logan, for 13 years. We have two sons. Alexander will be 4th grade and Benjamin will be in 1st grade this fall at HCS.

We also have two Eskimo Spitz-Border Collies named after two of my favorite mathematicians, Pythagoras and Fibonacci.

When not at school, I can typically be found on the baseball field watching the boys play ball or hiking in the woods somewhere.
